General

Shop opening hours

From Monday to Friday, most shops are open from 9 or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturdays the shops are open until 2:00 PM and not after that.

The exception is Eroski (on the Rampa) which does not close at noon and is open on Saturday afternoon.

On Sundays the shops are closed except for the Komo Komo on Plaza Axarquia (large parking lot on your left that you pass when you enter Cómpeta).

Groceries

When you drive up past the Tourist Office to the center of Competa, you will successively pass the supermarkets:

  • Dia

    • Supermarket for general shopping and bread freshly baked in-store: sourdough, spelt, croissantsand more.

  • Komo Komo

    • Best supermarket for fruits and vegetables and local fresh meat

  • Eroski, Calle Rampa 2 (road that runs quite steeply up to Plaza Almijara

    • Supermarket for general shopping. Best sorted in international products

  • El Epicúreo, French bakery Calle Sn. Antonio 52 (tegenover de school)

Food and drinks

  • Casa Paco, Plaza Almijara

    • Our favorite. Many delicious dishes to share ("para compartir") Gambas Pil Pil is a must!

  • Restaurante El Pampano, at Plaza Vendimia

    • Recommended. Excellent food, good service and atmosphere. Gambas Pil Pil are just as tasty as Paco's

  • Meson El Recreo, Lunch only

    • Recommended, good cuisine. Also gluten-free dishes.

  • Restaurante El Pilon, Labyrinth Street

    • Specialty meat from the grill

  • Restaurante Herbabuena, C. Puerta Nueva (next to parking garage) Lunch only

    • Excellent lunch menu

  • Casa Perico, Almijara Square

    • Good food but service sometimes a bit slow

  • Cortijo Paco, Avenida de Canillas 2 (after Hotel Balcon sharp bend to the right then after 100m on your right.

    • Luxurious appearance, laid tables, excellent cuisine

Villages in the area (see also "Walking" below)

  • Canillas de Albaida

    • Beautiful white village. Much smaller than Cómpeta and less lively, but perhaps therefore attractive. Nice to walk through and discover the picturesque square near the Church. There are several excellent restaurants.

  • Archez

    • Beautiful little village. Square with Moorish tower. Nice to see. There is a good restaurant El Curo. Excellent food, meat from the grill but also traditional Spanish dishes. There is new (2025) Pizeria, called La Peña, down at the river. Very good!

  • Frigiliana

    • One of the most beautiful White Villages in Andalusia. Very nice to walk through. Beautiful streets with many shops and galleries. Touristy, but still very worthwhile.
Can be easily combined with a visit to:

  • Acebuchal (From Frigiliana fifteen minutes uphill on a good, unpaved road)

    • This village was burned down during the Franco era. One of the original residents returned around 2000 and brought the village back to life. There is one restaurant that only lunch takes care of. Delicious dishes, large portions, some a bit heavy.

Hiking and mountain biking

The possibilities for hiking and mountain biking from Cómpeta are unlimited.

At the Tourist Office (opposite the bus station) you can get a lot of information about this. There is, among other things, a booklet with walking routes for sale by Joost Schepel. Joost Schepel has with his walking organization Spanje Anders, walking from Cómpeta has given a huge boost, if not put it on the map.

Many of his routes can also be found in Apps such as Komoot and Wikiloc.

There is a Three Villages Circular Walk from Cómpeta to Canillas de Albaida and Archez and back to Cómpeta.

To Acebuchal you can walk from the Helicopter Field (Google Maps location) on a good dirt road. You cross a small river that you can walk through with good walking shoes without getting wet feet (generally). Have a lunch in the restaurant in Acebuchal (see above) and walk back.

Coast / Beach

There are many attractive positions with just as many Chiringuito's. Our favorite is Bahia Beach Jazba at Torre del Mar.

There is a great Water theme park, Aquavelis at Torre del Mar.
